Mary McLaughlin’s Childhood
Mary McLaughlin was born on December 2, 1919 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the eldest of three daughters born to John and Nellie (Larson) McLaughlin. Her father was a carpenter and her mother worked as a seamstress. Mary’s family was very poor and they often had to rely on the kindness of others to get by.
Throughout her childhood, Mary struggled with poverty, but she never let it stop her from pursuing her interests. She loved playing sports and spent most of her time outside playing with her friends. In school, she enjoyed writing and drawing.
In 1939, Mary met George McLaughlin while they were both working at a Woolworth’s store. They married two years later and moved to Hackettstown, New Jersey, where George ran a grocery store. The McLaughlins had four children: John Jr., Peggy, David, and Anne.
During the 1950s, Mary began working as a secretary for the Hackettstown Board of Education. In this role she developed close ties with many of the town’s residents and quickly became well-loved by everyone in town. She also started volunteering with various community organizations and was eventually elected president of the township’s volunteer association.

Her Relationship with Her Parents
Mary McLaughlin’s relationship with her parents is a close one. They are both very supportive of her and have always been a huge part of her life. Mary credits her parents with helping to shape who she is as an individual, and they in turn are incredibly proud of their daughter. Her father is a firefighter and her mother is a nurse, so they have spent their entire careers providing care for others. Mary McLaughlin’s Family Life
Mary McLaughlin’s childhood was spent on a small family farm in central Pennsylvania. Her father was a dairy farmer and her mother was the primary caretaker of the household. As a child, Mary enjoyed spending time playing with her brothers and sisters, working on the family farm, and going to church.
After high school, Mary enrolled at Temple University in Philadelphia where she majored in English and minored in history. In 1967, she married Pat McLaughlin and they relocated to New York City. There, Mary started a family of her own, welcoming two girls into the world shortly thereafter.
Throughout her life, Mary has been deeply rooted in her Catholic faith. She has been an active member of St Patrick’s Cathedral for over 50 years. During that time, she has served as a deaconess and altar server as well as being president of the Women’s Guild. She also has been involved with numerous charitable organizations throughout the city including Easter Seals and Special Olympics Delaware Valley Chapter.
In 1996, Mary McLaughlin published her autobiography entitled “A Good Life: A Memoir” which chronicled her journey from growing up on a small farm in central Pennsylvania to becoming one of America’s most celebrated actresses and writers.
